Heart of Glass (1976)

brooke wat
That was nothing like the song.

casey oh my god
it was like if you asked someone who’s never watched a foreign language film to describe a stereotypical foreign language film.
So slow.
And angsty.
And boring.

brooke And it none of the characters made any sense.
The most normal one is a shepherd prophet whose entire role is describing future wars and warning this servant girl that her master might take advantage of her. Read More

Deadpool (2016)

casey Deadpool: It’s Freakazoid with boobs, blood, and swears.

brooke That’s surprisingly accurate.
We could just leave it at that and walk away, but I really enjoyed it so we should probably have a little more discussion than just that

casey To be honest, I didn’t think it was nearly as funny as Guardians of the Galaxy or Ant-Man. I guess that’s apples-to-oranges, because in the fractured Marvel Cinematic Universe, Deadpool, like the X-Men, is owned by Fox, and exists separately from the Disney juggernaut.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

casey Of all the classic movies we’ve discussed to date, Dr Strangelove is the first that we’d already seen. It’s one of my very favorites.

brooke True story. I believe you first showed it to me three or four years ago.

casey AAAAaaaaaaand?

brooke I really liked it then, and it was fun to watch it again.

casey I think it’s one of the funniest movies ever, almost effortlessly so…although Stanley Kubrick is not the kind of director who does “effortless.” But his cold war satire is entertaining on the surface while offering a sharp rebuke of the lunacy of Cold War ideology. Read More

Hail, Caesar! (2016)

casey All cards on the table: I freaking loved it

brooke That’s a pretty solid place to start
this movie truly was ridiculously good
The Coen Brothers have done it again

casey I’ll need another viewing or two to decide how it ranks in the Coen Brothers comedy lineup, but I can say Hail, Caesar! was one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long time.

brooke It was fun AND funny
and nice to look at
the costumes, sets, makeup: every detail was perfect Read More

Anomalisa (2015)

casey Was it transcendent for you? One of the poster quotes said it was transcendent.

brooke Hmmm… I wouldn’t call it “transcendent”, nor would I call it “the most human movie of the year” as someone else claimed.
What’s the opposite of transcendent?

casey Scendent?

brooke Yes. I found the film to be scendent. Read More
